The Irish senior boxing squad produced a ‘wunderbar’ performance to beat the German number one side 8-3 in a Round Robin tournament in Heidelberg Germany on Friday night.
Ireland lost by an identical scoreline to Germany at the same venue on Thursday evening but bounced back in style 24 hours later.
The Irish squad will now face France on Saturday night in their final assignment in Heidelberg.
According to Gary Keegan, who directs the Irish Amateur Boxing Associations High Performance programme, the Irish team were in top form last night.
He said: ‘The squad performed very well here last night but we are facing a tough task today against the French this evening because they have a very strong side here especially in the lower weights.
‘But we will take a lot of confidence from last night's performance.’
Ireland may have to plan without the services of Paddy Barnes and Carl Frampton against the French, however, as both picked up injuries last night.
Bantamweight Ryan Lindberg is also out after sustaining a shoulder injury on Thursday night.
European Union middleweight champion Darren Sutherland, who won his bouts against German opponents on Thursday and Friday, will have no fight on Saturday.
The Round Robin tournament is being used by Ireland, Germany and France as a warm up for October’s World Championships in Chicago which will also act as the first qualifier for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
The Irish Amateur Boxing Association will announce their squad for Chicago after they return from Germany.
Ireland are boxing out of the red corner in Germany.
