John Joe Joyce will represent Ireland at light welterweight at the Fifth European Union Championships following a hard fought victory over Aodh Carlyle at the National Stadium in Dublin this afternoon.

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) last week named an 11-man squad for the championships.

However, the 64kg position was up for grabs between Joyce and Carlyle.

Joyce, from the St Michael's Athy club, won the four rounder on a 26-16 scoreline and has now been included on the Irish panel for the Championships which glove off at the National Stadium on 18 June.

Joyce started today's bout well and took the first two rounds, but Carlyle, of the Golden Cobra club in Dublin, came more into the contest in the final two rounds.

The Irish panel will go into full-time training at the National Stadium from next Tuesday right up to the beginning of the tournament.

21 nations, including Ireland, have already been confirmed to take part in the tournament.

The IABA will hold a press conference in Dublin next Wednesday to announce further details of the tournament.
