The Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) will hold a press conference in Dublin next Wednesday to announce details of the 5th European Union Championships to be held at the National Stadium between 18-23 June.

21 nations, including Ireland, have already been confirmed to take part in the tournament.

The IABA has already named an 11-man squad for the tournament.

However, the light welterweight position on the Irish team is still up for grabs and will be disputed between John Joe Joyce (St Michael's Athy) and Aodh Carlyle (Golden Cobra Dublin).

Both men will go head-to-head at the Stadium tomorrow and the winner will claim the 64kg berth on the Irish panel for the championships.

Looking ahead to the four round showdown, Joyce said that he believes that it could have implications for the World Championships in Chicago next October, and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

He said: 'I have never boxed Aodh in a competitive match but we have sparred a lot and it is going to be a very tough fight. It's a winner takes all situation really and if you win your in, lose your out, it couldn't be simpler.

'The fight could have a lot of significance also, as whoever wins will, barring injury, be selected for  the light welterweight  position on the Irish team going forward to next Octobers World Championships in Chicago.

'The World Championships will act as one of the qualifiers for the Olympic Games and that is why next Saturday’s fight has a massive significance.

'There is a lot at stake for the two of us and it could be the fight of the year so far. Personally I'm delighted to be given the chance and I will be giving it everything as I want to represent my country at the European Union Championships.'
