Senior Boxing Championship round-up

Top boxing club St Michael's Athy are guaranteed at least two Irish titles after two of their boxers marched into next weekend's National Senior Championships finals following victories at the Stadium in Dublin.

David Oliver Joyce booked his place in the featherweight decider following victory over Ross Hickey and will now meet his St Michael's Athy team-mate Eric Donovan in next Friday's final.

And the welterweight showdown will also be an all-St Michael's affair after David Joyce set up a 69kg final with Roy Sheahan.

The Sheahan/Joyce clash is a repeat of last year's final, which Sheahan won 12-8.

John Joe Joyce, also of St Michael's Athy, who were awarded the IABA club award at the recent IABA awards night, will compete in the lightweight final against Ciaran Bates of St Aidens.

Bates booked his ticket in the 60Kg decider after racking up an impressive victory over JP Campbell.

Clonmel's Kevin Fennnessy will meet Ulster Senior champion Ryan Lindberg in the 54Kg final after he edged out TJ Doheny in a very close bantamweight clash.

Tommy Dwyer of the St Aiden's club is also within one fight of a senior title following a close victory over Mark Wickham.

Meanwhile, Belfast Eamon O'Kane meets defending champion Darren Sutherland next weekend following a fourth round stoppage of Sean Shevlin and Willie Mitchell clashes with six-time national champ and European bronze medallist Ken Egan.

The heavyweight clash between John Sweeney and Michael Mullaney produced the fight of the evening with the lead changing hands twice before Sweeney forced Mullaney into a standing count in the fourth en route to victory.

The super-heavyweight semi-final went the way of Belfast's Cathal McMonagle who defeated Drimnagh's Simon O'Reilly.

The 2007 National Senior Championships will resume with finals night at the Stadium in Dublin next Friday night.

World and back-to-back lightweight champion Katie Taylor will meet Finland's Eva Walstrom on the night.
