Irish middleweight Darren Sutherland will almost certainly miss next week's EU Championships in Hungary after suffering an eye injury in last Friday night’s senior international meeting with Russia at the National Stadium in Dublin.

Sutherland, from the St Saviour's club in Dublin, picked up an injury to his left eye in the second round of his bout with Danil Shved. The fight was stopped in round two and Sutherland was taken to hospital that night.

Eric Donovan (knee) is also an injury doubt for the championships after he had to pull out of the 4-4 draw with Russia.

However, the good news for the Irish Amateur Boxing Association is that Roy Sheehan is expected to shake off a shoulder injury and take his place on the Irish squad for the tournament which begin in Budapest on 22 May.

Light heavyweight Ken Egan, who recorded an impressive victory at the Stadium on Friday last, will defend the EU gold medal he won in Sardinia last year.
