Irish middleweight Andy Lee got his professional career off to a blistering start after he received a unanimous decision over Anthony Cannon at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit in the early hours of this morning, Irish time.

Lee took all six rounds in the bout and floored his Michigan-born opponent midway through the fourth and forced him into two standing counts in the sixth and final round.

According to the former St Francis Limerick southpaw, his win was so comprehensive that the judges didn't even bother reading out the scores at the end of the contest.

Lee said: "In fairness to Cannon he never threw in the towel and he was a brave fighter and he went the distance. But I was rarely troubled and I'm very pleased with my performance."

He added: "I floored him with a right hook in the fourth and the ref gave him two counts in the final round and the outcome was never in doubt.

"I am delighted to have got my first professional fight under my belt and out of the way and I am now looking forward to fighting again in Germany next month."

Lee fights on the undercard to the Vladamir Klitschko versus Chris Bryd IBF World Heavyweight title decider in Mannheim, Germany on April 22.

The Limerick man goes into a training camp with Klitschko in Majorca, Spain next week under coach and manager Emanuel Steward.
