Middleweight Darren Sutherland is just one fight away from landing an Irish Senior title after stopping St Paul’s ace Keith Whelan in round four of their semi-final clash at the National Stadium in Dublin last night.
Sutherland, who reached the quarter finals of the World Championships in China last November, will meet the winner of this evenings other semi-final between Edward Healy and Gisha Gezim in next Fridays 75Kg final.
Conor Ahern (51Kg) is also guaranteed at least second place after he saw off the challenge of John Paul Kinsella in a battle of the former Irish champs last night, while Roy Sheahan cruised to an impressive 69Kg win over Terry O'Neill.
The Super Heavyweight Division as expected went all the way down to the wire with Martin Sweeney edging out Belfast's Conor Carmichael after four rounds failed to separate both men.
The Irish Senior Championships will continue tonight with ten semi finals in all weight categories.
