Sutherland aims to take national title

Darren Sutherland is looking to land his first Irish title at the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) Senior Championships.

Middleweight Sutherland, ranked at number five in Europe, reached the quarter finals of the World Championships in China in November only to lose to eventual world champion Korbov Matvey from Russia.

Despite the defeat, 2005 was a good year for the 23-year-old Dubliner from the St Saviours OBA club who replaced Athens 2004 Olympian Andy Lee on the Irish team.

"My entire focus is  on winning my first senior title at the Stadium as it's unusual to be competing at such a high level international and not have a senior title," said Sutherland.

"I would be confident that I can get the year off to a good start . But I have been boxing long enough to know that you can take nothing for granted," he added.
