Ireland's hopes of landing a medal at the Senior World Boxing Championships were dashed after middleweight Darren Sutherland was beaten at the quarter-final stage by Russian Korobov Matvey in Mianyang City in China this morning.

Sutherland from the St Saviour's OBA club in Dublin, was stopped on the 20 point rule (35-15) in the third round of his contest with the Russian southpaw who is now guaranteed at least a bronze medal.

Sutherland's loss brings Ireland's involvement in this year['s World Championships to an end after Ken Egan (81kg), Roy Sheehan (69kg), Eric Donovan (57kg) and Conor Ahern (51kg) all went out this week.

The championships conclude on Sunday.
