Irish featherweight Eric Donovan has been beaten this morning at the World Boxing Championships in China by the experienced Romanian Simion Viorel.

Donovan was beaten on points, losing 40-25.

The 20-year-old from Athy put up a characteristically brave performance, but was unable to recovered from a slow start.

Trailing by eight points after the first round, there was little hope Donovan could work his way back against the experienced and physically strong Viorel, a former European silver medallist.
