Eric Donovan claimed his place on the Irish boxing squad for next month’s world championships in China with a convincing gold medal performance at the Multi-Nations in Finland.
Donovan (57kg) from St Michael’s Athy club beat Finnish contender Jal Naskali 44-22, while Conor Ahern and Roy Sheehan both landed silver medals.
Ahern (51Kg) went down to Philipino Warlito Parrenas (21-16), while Sheehan (69kg)lost out to Are Korhonen (21-16)
Sunday’s gold medal performance guarantees Donovan his place on the Irish world championship team along with Ken Egan (81Kg) and Darren Sutherland (75Kg).
"It was a magnificent achievement to get our three-man team into three finals and once again we are bringing home medals from a major Multi-Nations tournament", said IABA Elite High Performance Director Garry Keegan.
"Eric will be on the Irish team for the World Championships in Beijing along with Ken Egan and Darren Sutherland and we will asses Roy's and Conor’s performances today".
Light heavyweight Kenneth Egan, Daren Sutherland at middleweight, welterweight Roy Sheehan, Eric Donovan at featherweight and the promising flyweight Conor Ahern have all been named in the team that will all travel to the championships.
The Ireland team are scheduled to arrive at their training camp in the Philippines on November 3 and then travel to China for the world championships which begin on November 11.
