Irish boxing duo in the medals

Irish boxing aces Darren Sutherland and Ken Egan were celebrating yesterday after landing gold and silver medals at the Senior World Class tournament in Makhaklala Russia.

Middleweight Sutherland, from the St Saviours club in Dublin, led the way with a convincing 37-22 win in his final over Russian puncher Elman Djavatov.

But Neilstown's Ken Egan (81Kg) had to be content with silver after he lost out 40-27 to Khalidov Shamil, also from Russia.

Sutherland and Egan were in Makhakala as part of a two-man team under coaches Billy Walsh and Zuari Anita and Philip Rooney and Orlagh Sampson.

IABA Elite High Performance director Gary Keegan described the medal haul as a magnificent achievement.

He revealed: "Darren and Ken had four fights in four days out here and they performed brilliantly. The tournament is also ideal preparation for the World Championships in Beijing this November."
