Brian Magee sensationally retained his IBO super middleweight title with a first round knock-out of Argentina's Omar Gonzalez at the Ulster Hall in Belfast last night. Belfast man Magee needed only one minute and 50 seconds to bring an end to the threat of Argentinian champion Gonzalez.
Rising super middleweight star Magee unloaded a chopping right hand which caught the challenger on the top of the head, sending him stumbling to the canvas. While the punch did not seem particularly explosive, it clearly disorientated Gonzalez who failed to beat the count and was prevented from continuing by referee Terry O'Connor. While Gonzalez protested, it did seem that he was in no condition to continue.
For Magee it was the perfect homecoming as he was having his first title defence in Belfast since winning the championship 18 months ago. Afterwards Magee said: "That was the best punch I've thrown in my career. I'm growing in confidence all the time and my punching power is getting better and better. I really feel that I'm ready for the big boys in the super middleweight division.
