There were contrasting fortunes for Irish boxers at the World Amateur Championships in Thailand on Monday with two of our six competitors winning their opening bouts. Limerick native Andy Lee was first to record a victory, the teenager impressing in his 28-16 victory over Korean champion Kim Jai-ki to get the ball rolling.
Lee was joined on the winner's list by Kenneth Egan who dominated his 81kg division match against Dunatas Jasevicius of Lithuania.
However, in the 48kg division Conor Ahern was beaten 17-11 by Hong Moo-won, while Brian Gillen was beaten in the 54kg division by Indonesia's Aranada Moniaga 29-12.
Elsewhere, Paul McCloskey lost out in the 64kg category to Belarus's Bykouski Slarhei, while Sligo heavyweight Alan Reynolds was on the wrong end of a drubbing by Vyacheslav Uzelkov of the Ukraine.
