The long-awaited clash between Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis looks set to go ahead once again with the news that Tyson has been granted a licence to box in Georgia. The original plans to stage the WBC and IBF title showdown in Las Vegas on April 6th were scrapped when Tyson was refused a licence by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after his fracas with Lewis at a New York press conference to promote their proposed clash.
There is now a possibility that they will meet early in July, with Atlanta's Georgia Dome a possible venue. Georgia Boxing Commission administrator Tom Mishou told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Shelly Finkel, Mr Tyson's manager, contacted my office, he asked if I would send him a licence application that he could get Mr Tyson to fill out. I said sure. I sent it to him, Mr Tyson filled it out, they sent me the required medicals, they sent me the money, we issued the licence.”
Tyson and Lewis were set to share a purse in the region of £70million if the fight had gone ahead in Vegas, although it seems that Atlanta could offer a windfall somewhat similar.
