Belfast's Brian Magee claimed the IBO super-middleweight in dramatic fashion when he recorded a sensational first round victory over Argentinian tough guy Ramon Britez at the Everton Park Sports Centre in Liverpool tonight. The 26-year-old can be justifiably proud of an amazing win in only his 14th professional fight against Britez, 10 years his senior and vastly more experienced.
Magee had his opponent down three times before referee Paul Connor counted the defending champion out. The challenger had been expected to keep the fight at long range in the opening exchanges, but instead chose to stand toe to toe from the opening bell. That tactic reaped instant reward when a short right hook, albeit coupled with a clash of heads, sent Britez crashing to the canvas inside the first minute.
Another clinical short right wobbled the champion just 20 seconds later and Britez was again on the floor after Magee followed up with three stinging straight rights. Britez rose bravely for a second time, but Magee kept up the pressure and there was no coming back for the South American when sheer weight of punches forced him to touch down once more.
