Shane Mosley retained his WBC welterweight title when he knocked out Britain's Adrian Stone in the third round in Las Vegas.
After a hesitant opening round, Stone managed to rough up the American star in the second. However, an overhand right stunned the challenger in the third and when Mosley followed up with another right and two left hooks the contest was over. Stone hit the canvas after two minutes of the third and referee Jay Nady did not even bother to count before calling for medical assistance.
Stone had entered the ring as the reigning IBO light-middleweight champion after dethroning Irishman Michael Carruth in April last year and defending that title against British trio Geoff McCreesh, Derek Roche and Joe Townsley. But he slipped to the fourth defeat of his 36-fight pro career after proving no match for the awesome Mosley, who claimed his belt with a points win over Oscar de la Hoya in June last year and was making a third defence. Rated as one of the top five pound-for-pound fighters in the world, the former IBF lightweight champion improved his record to 37-0 with a 35th win inside the distance.
