Boxing: McCullough granted licence

Wayne McCullough has been given the go ahead to resurrect his boxing career, after receiving his licence to fight from the Nevada State Athletic Commission yesterday. The Belfast man, who had to withdraw from his scheduled fight with Hungarian Sandor Koczek on October 19th following the discovery of a cyst on his brain, was understandably delighted with the news.

"I knew it was only a matter of time before I received this good news," said McCullough. "I've been in the gym training for the past two months. I'm ready to return to the ring as soon as possible." McCullough returned to the US, and underwent a succession of gruelling tests at UCLA Medical Centre before getting the green light.

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) also gave their backing, insisting McCullough faced "no greater risk than any other fighter." He is expected to return to the ring this spring, and according to promoter Dan Goossen, may make his debut in Las Vegas "within the next 60 days."
