C&S UCC Demons were crowned Basketball Ireland Men’s Premier League champions after a 116-65 win over Dublin Inter.
The win completed their unbeaten league and cup campaign in 2014/2015 and now just the Champions Trophy stands between the Cork side and the history books – no team has ever gone an entire season unbeaten in three national competitions.
Dublin Inter never threatened to spoil the coronation party as Demons broke the 100 point barrier for the ninth time this season.
Shane Coughlan feels Demons are ‘at a new level’ in 2015.
"Last year we felt we threw away the league when we lost at home to Killester. Without doubt we wanted to win the league because this club has gone a long time without it and the double has made it sweeter," he said.
Travelodge Swords Thunder were presented with their runners-up medals despite defeat at home to Belfast Star while Black Amber Templeogue overtook Killester to finish third in the table with a 93-81 win at UL Eagles.
Team Montenotte Hotel remainon course to retain their Women’s Premier League title after Saturday’s rout of Courtyard Liffey Celtics in the play-off semi-final first leg.
The 2014 Champions side held a 16 point advantage at half time but pushed on in the second half to ease pressure on the return leg in Glanmire. Meagan Hoffmann returned for Celtics but the Leixlip side couldn’t get around Team Montenotte Hotel’s aggressive defensive.
"They’re not champions for nothing," said Celtics Coach Vinny O’Keeffe."We’d been talking all week about getting them into a half-court game but the problem was they got us into a half-court game. I’ll have to see what we can do for next week that will make a difference."
In the other semi-final, Singleton SuperValu Brunell will take a slight lead into the second leg after a 53-50 win at home to DCU Mercy.
Mercy held a double digit lead heading into the final quarter before Kieran O’Leary sprung Edel Thornton from the bench. The 18 year oldcombined with Katie Hannemann forBrunellto outscore the Dubliners by 15 points down the stretch.
