Colin O’Reilly hit a season high 30 points as C&S UCC Demons maintained their unbeaten run in the Basketball Ireland Men’s Premier League.
Demons came from behind to beat Travelodge Swords Thunder 93-78 at the Mardyke with Lehmon Colbert working the high post and O’Reilly hitting a succession of three pointers.
It was Demons’ second game in 24 hours as they outmuscled defending champions Killester 76-63 on Saturday evening.
Saturday evening’s clash was a heated affair. Killester lost Ciaran Roe in the first quarter with the recurrence of an ankle injury and weren’t shooting the ball as well as in previous games.
A gap opened up after 15 minutes as Kyle Hosford found an open Colin O’Reilly to shoot the three and while Demons were wary of the threat of John Behan, Killester were kept at arm’s length.
UCD Marian kept pressure on the leaders with a 65-67 win at Belfast Star who also lost out to Dublin Inter on Sunday.
Inter’s own back to back fixtures had mixed results as they were beaten by UL Eagles. Eagles guard Matt Hall drained a three pointer with four seconds left to win the game 66-33.
Templeogue exploded into the life in the league with a 113-104 win over BFG Neptune. Templeogue were 30 points clear at one point but had to withstand a late onslaught as key players were fouled out.
Jason Killeen hit 28 points in his side’s first win of the season.
Earlier in the weekend, Neptune beat DCU Saints 92-66. Saints forward Martins Provizors was in foul trouble from the second quarter as Neptune deployed their fast break with good effect.
In the Women’s Premier League, Meteors over took opponents Singleton Supervalu Brunell at the top of the table with a 81-62 win at Colaiste Iosagain.
Kate O’Flaherty hit three shots in succession from outside the arch to put daylight between the sides in the second quarter.
Team Montenotte Hotel are also unbeaten after their 86-34 rout of UL Huskies.
Ali Maguire’s return from Dublin camogie duty wasn’t enough to help Killester to a first win of the season as they were beaten 59-63 by Courtyard Liffey Celtics.
Killester kept in touch with some trademark outside shooting from Mimi Clarke but Celtics’ height advantage and aggression made it difficult for the home side to box out on defence.
DCU Mercy got back to winning ways with a 77-55 win at home to Maxol WIT Wildcats. Sarah Woods stepped up with a game high 25 points as Mercy took control from the start.
