ESB Men's and Women's Basketball Leagues roundup.
Tralee Tigers maintained their unbeaten record but were forced into double overtime before defeating Killester 120-113 on Saturday. Tralee’s hero of the evening was Micheal Quirke, who made the crucial baskets in the closing seconds of full time and extra time to allow Tralee their eventual victory.
A late ruling by the Superleague Board on Friday evening prohibited Mike Trimmer from playing with St Vincent’s on Saturday night, following an incident between Trimmer and an official when playing with Tralee Tigers last season.
St Vincent’s went on to travel to Limerick, but further disaster struck when new signing Eric Brown dislocated his thumb early in the game, resulting in being benched for the duration and St Vincent’s eventual 101-88 defeat.
Despite a strong third quarter fight-back, Waterford Crystal conceded an 86-76 defeat to MDS Star, allowing Star the sole North Conference victory of the weekend. Tolka Rovers continue their campaign without a victory, going down 105-89 to Demons, while a poor performance from Notre Dame saw them defeated 94-82 by Gleneagle Lakers.
In the women’s Superleague, UL continue their reign, defeating Tolka Rovers 82-47, while Glanmire returned to form for a 72-65 victory over Drimnagh. Wildcats defeated St Paul’s (69-84), while Killester defeated Meteors 96-80.
