Burger King Limerick have won the 2002 Senior Mens' Basketball Cup final after beating Star of Belfast 89-83 at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght this afternoon. Belfast mounted a serious challenge in the final quarter of this pulsating tie to bring the deficit to a mere three points but Limerick team captain Tommy Walsh had a three-pointer right on the buzzer to secure his side's first ever Cup title.
There was success for Limerick in the Junior Womens' Cup when University of Limerick defeated Presentation Thurles 73-58 but their senior women's team were unable to pull off a hat-trick when UL were defeated 78-66 by DART Killester in the Senior Womens' Cup Final. Waterford Crystal will have to wait another year for their name on a Cup trophy after they were defeated 57-45 by St Vincent's in the Junior Men's Cup final.
