Basketball: O'Neal chosen as MVP

Los Angeles Lakers superstar centre, Shaquille O'Neal, finished one vote shy of becoming the first unanimous winner of the NBA Most Valuable Player Award in league history, in results announced by the selection panel yesterday.

O'Neal was the overwhelming choice as MVP of the 1999-2000 NBA season, receiving 121 of 122 first-place votes from a panel of broadcasters and sports writers throughout the United States and Canada. He is the first member of a Lakers team to earn the award since Magic Johnson.
