Mark English won his first Diamond League event after coming out on top in the 800m event in China.
At the event in Shaoxing/Keqiao, the Donegal man – who has won a Diamond non-league event previously – ran a time of 1:43.85 to finish ahead of Botswana's Kethobogile Haingura (1:43.89) and America’s Brandon Miller (1:44.00).
English set a meeting record at his season-opener, and his second-best time in a Diamond League event after clocking 1:43.37 in Hungary last year.
In August 2019, English won a Diamond non-league event in Birmingham – the Müller Grand Prix.
He becomes the first Irish male athlete to win a Diamond League event, and joins fellow Irish athletes Ciara Mageean, Rhasidat Adeleke and Sarah Healy in the previous winners’ enclosure.
