Sean Aigboboh set a new Irish record in the 200m at the Cameron Burrell Invitational in Houston on Thursday, lowering the previous best time set by Paul Hession in 2007.

Aigboboh, who runs for the University of Houston in a programme headed by former sprint star Carl Lewis, clocked 20.27 seconds in the fastest of four races over the distance.

Aigboboh, who was nurtured at Tallaght AC and who has been better known for his exploits over 100m, knocked 0.03 off Hession's time set at the National Senior Track and Field Championships in Santry 19 years ago.

The 20-year-old's time in Texas awaits ratification, but was set right on the permissible wind assistance limit of 2.0m/sec.

Elsewhere in Texas, Rhasidat Adeleke commenced her outdoor season by winning her section of the 200m in 22.86, as she gears up for the 400m at the Shanghai Diamond League meeting on May 16.
