Efrem Gidey broke his own national 10km road race record after clocking a time of 27:39 in Valencia this morning.
The Clonliffe Harriers runner came home in 12th spot, beating his Irish record by four seconds, which was set in the same race last year.
His compatriot Jack O'Leary was only three seconds behind him, finishing in 18th spot. The Mullingar athlete posted a time of 27:42, which was one second faster than Gidey's previous Irish record.
Cormac Dalton, also of Mullingar Harriers, finished 39th with a time of 28:04, while Callum Morgan was four seconds further back in 28:08.
The race was won by 10,000m world bronze medallist in Tokyo, Sweden's Andreas Almgren, who set a new European record of 26.46.
In the women's race, Limerick's Sorcha Nic Dhomhnaill's was the first Irish woman home, finishing 42nd in a time of 32:24.
19-year old Ava Crean came home in 48th place, taking over a minute off her best time, finishing in 32:46.
The race was won by Scot Eilish McColgan, who regained her European women's 10km record in the process.
The 35-year-old clocked 30.08, just seven days after Belgium's Jana Van Lent won in Nice in 30:10, some nine seconds quicker than McColgan’s previous best.
