2012 Olympian Caitriona Jennings has set a new world record in the lesser-run 100-mile distance, clocking a time of 12:37:04, more than five minutes faster than the previous best.
The Donegal native achieved the feat at the Tunnel Hill 100 Mile in Illinois, her debut race over the distance.
The previous record of 12:42:40 was set by American Camille Herron in 2017.
Jennings is no stranger to ultra-distance events. Earlier this year, she set the Irish 50k record at the Donadea 50k National Championships and also holds the Irish 100k record of 7:43:01, set in 2021.
The Illinois course has gained a reputation for speed, with several world records set there in both the 50- and 100-mile distances in recent years.
Jennings' accolades include victory at the 2022 IAU 50k European Championships and multiple top-10 finishes at the prestigious Comrades Marathon.
Impressively, she paced herself perfectly for most of the 100-mile race, ticking off each mile in seven minutes and 26 seconds. She only slowed slightly in the final stretch but managed to keep underworld record pace and finish fourth overall.
