A third-place finish by Andrew Coscoran in the 5,000m event at the Miami Grand Slam Track meet was enough to secure second place overall in the long distance events and earn a $50,000 (€44,200) payday.
The Miami Grand Slam – one of four over the course of the year and created by four-times Olympic gold medallist Michael Johnson and is a direct challenge to the Diamond League – saw Balbriggan native Coscoran make a brilliant start on Friday by winning the 3000m event.
Competitors race in two events per slam, with the athlete who has accumulated the highest points total across both events winning the top prize.
The 12 points gained for the win meant Coscoran entered the 5000m knowing a top-two finish will guarantee him at least $50,000, with the winner pocketing $100,000.
Grant Fisher, who was finished second to the Irish Olympian on Friday, put in a masterful display to dominate in a time of 13:40.32. Fellow American Cooper Tearle pipped Coscoran (13:46.30) on the line for second, but the six points moved him to 18 and second overall, two points adrift of Fisher and five clear of Tearle.
Third place gets $30,000 per slam, and fourth gets $25,000 per slam.
The remaining meets will take place in Philadelphia at the end of the month and Los Angeles in June.
Each Grand Slam race has eight competitors - all selected by the Grand Slam Track Racing Committee.
