In-form Andrew Coscoran says that while he will compete in the 3000m at next month's European Indoor Athletics Championships, he is undecided over his events at next week’s national championships.
The holder of the 42-year-old record, Eamonn Coghlan, was there to witness the milestone and it came just a week after Coscoran broke the Irish 3000m record.
Coscoran now holds all four of the mile and 1,500m Irish records and will travel to Apeldoorn, Netherlands (6-9 March) full of confidence.
The Star of the Sea athlete, who has changed his coaching set up and recently joined the New Balance Manchester group in England, says he will target the 3000m at the Europeans, yet is undecided about next week’s national indoor championships.
"I'm going to run the 3000m there (Apeldoorn) because I think I'm quite strong there at the moment and it makes the most sense. But I think outdoors for me, I think I'm quite excited to try and take a crack at another 1500m," he said.
"I can hopefully try and improve my own national 1500-meter record if I get in the right race and I'm excited to try and do it.
"I'm deciding between the 3000m and 1500m for the nationals (22/23 February). So, we'll see who's competing and then I'll decide between the two. It'd be nice to get a bit of competition on Irish soil and maybe we can get a few good match-ups."
With a short turnaround between the European and World Indoors (21/23 March), Coscoran is likely to fly from the Netherlands directly to China.

The 28-year-old fell short in his quest to reach an Olympic semi-final in the 1500m last year, but believes changes in his set-up and environment should stand him in good stead.
"I'm not a big man for making excuses, but I did get sick coming into the Paris Olympics," he said. "I think that definitely had a major impact on my performance.
"I didn't quite get the most out of myself over the summer. This is like some of the training that I did, so last year is kind of paying off now as well. I think I am in a really good setup now."
