Oisín Joyce won Ireland's first ever throwing medal at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Peru after clinching bronze in the men's javelin.
The 19-year-old Mayo native extended his own national U20 record to 73.89m on route to the landmark finish on Thursday night.
The Lake District (Ballinrobe) AC athlete's feat in the Peruvian capital Lima marks Ireland's fifth ever medal at World U20 level and comes 30 years on from high jumper Antoine Burke winning the first Irish medal at that age grade.
Since then, Ciara Mageean (1500m), Sommer Lecky (high jump), and the 4x400m women's relay team of Molly Scott, Ciara Neville, Gina Akpe-Moses, Patience Jumbo-Gula and Rhasidat Adeleke have all claimed World U20 silver medals.
