Former USA distance runner Mary Cain has completed an international switch and made herself available to compete for Ireland.

Cain was a prodigious talent as a teenager, qualifying for the World Championships in 2013 when aged 17 and becoming a world junior champion at 3,000 metres a year later.

She hails from New York but has an Irish connection through her grandparents.

The 27-year-old hasn't competed for some time. Late last year she settled a $20m lawsuit against Alberto Salazar and Nike for emotional abuse.

Cain was part of the controversial Nike Oregon Project from the age of 16.
