At the age of 18, middle distance runner Nick Griggs is already making waves.

He already holds the European U20 3000m title and in two weeks' time he will defend that title in Jerusalem. He's currently the sixth fastest junior in the world in 2023 and second in Europe over 1500m.

He ran 3:55.73 to finish third in the Morton Mile on Friday evening - a time that broke his Irish junior record and makes him the No 2 U20 miler in the world.

Reflecting on his run in Santry, a somewhat humble Griggs told RTÉ Sport: "The field was really, really strong. I'm really happy to come away with a quick time. I can't ask for much more.

"For me it's quite normal, I'm just a normal kid. There's nothing fancy about my life. I drove down here with my mum and I'll drive back with my mum.

"It's unbelivable to see the progress that I'm making, I know there's a lot more improving to do, to make that next step, so that I can make a living out of it. To one day be an Olympian and fulfill that lifelong dream."

Defending his European title and making the Irish team for the World Championships in Budapest are the targets for this summer.

On those, he added: "I want to defend the title I won two years ago. I have been focused on that all year, that's my main goal for the summer. It would mean the world to me. To be able to say that I'm two-time European champion at 18.

"Hopefully I'll get some bonus points for being third [in the Morton Mile] for Budapest and to run something good in Lucerne next week and then see where that places me on the quota list. If I'm in the list come the nationals in a few weeks time I've got the standard. Hopefully I get selected by Athletics Ireland. If I'm not in the quota come the nationals I've got a lot of work to do.

"I still have to win a national title and it's difficult to go out and do with the standard we have right now."

The Paris Olympics is just a year away. Griggs is not afraid to dream big.

Running is not about the money or the fame, it's about winning, to get there, to work towards next year to make it a reality.

"I won't be satisfied with my career until I win an Olympic medal."
