Ireland's Luke McCann smashed the national 1,000m record to finish seventh at the Monaco Diamond League on Wednesday evening, as Jake Wightman took victory with a new world lead time.

McCann, 24, clocked 2:16.40 to break the previous record of 2:17.58, which was set by Olympian David Matthews in September 1996, a full two years before McCann was born.

In February this year, McCann lowered the Irish 1,000m indoor record to 2:17.40 while competing in the USA.

Scotsman Wightman had to settle for Commonwealth Games bronze in Birmingham on Saturday, ending hopes of a summer hat-trick.

But he showed what he is capable of in Monaco with a run of 2:13.88 - the ninth fastest of all time and a meeting record - to pip Canada's Marco Arop.

American Clayton Murphy completed the top three.
