Ciara Mageean finished a disappointing 12th in a field of 14 in the 1500m at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm.

The Portaferry athlete arrived in Sweden in great form, having set two Irish records in the past month in the 800m and 1000m and with her sights set on Sonia O'Sullivan’s 1500m record.

However, she never got going against a high-quality line-up, clocking four minutes 10.99 seconds – a time more than 10 seconds outside her personal best and over 12 seconds off the national record set by O'Sullivan in 1995.

Polish pacemaker Aneta Lemiesz carried the field to the 800m mark in 2:09.08 before exiting with just under two laps to run.

European champion Laura Muir led at the bell and powered clear on the final lap to win in 3:57.86 – the fastest time in the world this year – with Laura Weightman and Melissa Courtney-Bryant completing a one-two-three in the event for British athletes.
