The New York City Marathon originally scheduled to be held on 1 November has been cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The New York Road Runners, in partnership with the mayor's office, said the decision to cancel the event was made due to coronavirus-related health and safety concerns for runners, spectators, volunteers and staff.

Last month, the Dublin Marathon was cancelled due to the pandemic. The race was due to be held on Sunday, 25 October.

The Berlin Marathon will also not take place this year, it has been confirmed.

The race had been scheduled for 26-27 September but organisers had already said that it could not go ahead on that date because of Germany's ban on public gatherings of more than 5,000 people until 24 October.

"Fun, joy, health and success are attributes that characterise the BMW Berlin Marathon, but we are not able to guarantee all of this at the moment. Your health, as well as all of our health, is our first priority," Berlin organisers said.
