The coronavirus pandemic has forced the cancellation of this year's edition of the Morton Games, which was scheduled to take place on 10 July in Santry.
The news comes as a further blow to domestic athletics, with the Cork City Sports meeting on 7 July also having been called off.
Morton Games director Noel Guiden said: "We felt it important to make an early decision in the interest of our stakeholders, sponsors, volunteers and, most importantly, our Morton Games athletes.
"Of course, the health of all is of paramount importance, and on that front there can be no compromise."
Athletics Ireland chief executive Hamish Adams has endorsed the decisions to postpone both prestigious events, and said: "Athletics Ireland has long been supporters of both the Cork City Sports and the Morton Games, and we see both events as real highlights on the athletics calendar.
"The news will come as a disappointment, but we are in no doubt that the correct decisions have been made, and we look forward to even bigger and better events, with the BAM Cork City Sports and Morton Games returning in 2021."
Planners are already looking for a suitable date on a congested calendar for the Morton Games in 2021, with 11 July tentatively suggested, subject to approval from the European Athletics Association.
Next year's Olympic Games commence on 23 July, with the track and field events beginning on 31 July.
