Alex Wright finished in 31st place in the 20km race walk at the World Athletic Championships in what were extremely testing conditions.
Wright finished in a time of 1:37:33 nearly 11 minutes behind winner Toshikazu Yamanishi of Japan.
Vasily Mizinov, a Russian authorised to compete as a neutral athlete, closed up on Yamanishi towards the end of the race, finishing 15 seconds behind him, while Perseus Karlstrom took the bronze.
Several walkers did not finish the race on Doha's famous Corniche promenade, which started at 23:30 to attempt to minimise the harmful effects of the heat on competitors.
Wright admitted afterwards that he struggled in the Doha conditions when speaking to RTÉ Sport: "From the first km, the heat, the humidity, took it out of me really badly," he said
"I trained in Spain near the coast where it was also very humid and I really struggled there with the training.
"Today, I set off very easy, took a very conservative approach but even that didn't help.
"I was disappointed with my finish; I expected better."
