Thomas Barr narrowly missed out on a podium finish at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Rome, finishing in fourth place in the 400 metre hurdles.

The Waterford man clocked a time of 49.65 but was narrowly edged out by Takatoshi Abe of Japan, who finished in 49.57 to take third spot.

Rai Benjamin of America ran 47.58 to come home in first place, while his fellow countryman David Kendziara took second place in a time of 49.99.

Barr's best time of the season still stands at 49.41 from his third-place finish at the Shanghai Diamond League last month.

He also finished in third place in Stockholm last week, with the IAAF Diamond League final coming up later in the year.
