McCarthy hails Irish female para athletes

European champion Niamh McCarthy was always confident of winning gold in the F41 discuss in Berlin.

The 24-year-old from Cork destroyed the field to complete a great week for Irish para sport.

She said the most satisfying thing was seeing Ireland bring home nine medals from the championships and the fact that every female member on the team made the podium at the World Para Athletics European Championships.

"I’ve had a really strong season, I’ve really pushed on and I’ve closed the gap between myself and the girl ranked first so I was coming in in a strong position," she said.

"The fact that the strongest competitors in this event aren’t in Europe meant I was comfortable coming into the competition knowing there wasn’t any major competition there.

"There was a big enough gap to be fair! The girls I’m trying to beat weren’t there, they’re from Tunisia, so it was nice to see I was the clear winner.

"It has been great and it was great to see that every single female athlete that was out here finished with a medal. It was a strong team overall, but especially for the girls."

Jason Smyth (two golds), Noelle Lenihan (gold), Orla Barry (gold), Greta Streimikyte (gold), Orla Comerford (two bronzes) and Jordan Lee (bronze) were Ireland’s other medallists in Berlin.

McCarthy finished second at the Paralympics in Rio two years ago behind world leader, Tunisian Raoua Tlili.

Her 31.76m final throw on Sunday was a championship record and was ten metres further than the second placed athlete. In fact, each of her throws was further than anything her competitors managed in Germany.

"I was getting a bit nervous throughout the competition, but I managed to calm myself down and each throw was better than the last so I got what I was looking for with the last throw," she said.

"It was a very long wait until the competition but to be coming in with a really good season behind me I was kind of expecting to finish the season well so I didn’t take too much notice of it, or as little as I could anyway and it all worked out in the end!"
