Aaron Sexton ran a personal best 21.06 to qualify for the 200m semi-final at the World Under-20 Championships in Tampere, Finland.
Sexton finished fourth in the fifth of five heats, but his was a fast time that would have placed him second in two of the other qualifiers.
The semi-finals are on Thursday, starting at roughly 5.15pm Irish time.
The women’s 100m semi-finals are on at 4.0pm and will feature two Irish athletes – Gina Akpe-Moses and Ciara Neville.
Neville finished second in her semi in a season's best 11.54 while Akpe-Moses also finished second in 11.58.
Only the first two plus the two fastest losers qualify for the final at 7.15.
