Thomas Barr stepped off the plane in Oslo and produced his fastest 400m hurdles run of the season in the Diamond League on Thursday night.

The Waterford man was a very late addition to the race, only flying out at midday, but he clocked 49.53 from lane one to finish eighth.

"I felt I was a little bit staggered coming down the home straight but I'm really happy with that time in only my second real race of the year," said the 25-year-old afterwards.

"I know where I need to work on. I need to go out harder."

Barr revealed just how little prep time he had for the race having got the call at the last minute.

"I got home yesterday evening at five or six o'clock. Luckily I was staying up in Dublin with my girlfriend. I got a phone call then two or three hours after I landed saying, 'there's a lane in Oslo, do you want it?'. I said 'yeah, definitely'.

"I got a flight at midday, got to the hotel at 5pm and got the the track at 7pm. You're not going to look a gift horse in the mouth."
