Mick Clohisey and Fionnuala McCormack will lead Ireland's marathon charge in Rio after Athletics Ireland named their teams for the summer Games - but Dublin Marathon national champion Sean Hehir has not made the cut.

Seven men and five women had achieved the qualifying times for the Rio Games - but only three of each could be selected.

Sergiu Ciobanu, Kevin Seaward, Paul Pollock, Mick Clohisey, Gary Thornton, Hehir and Thomas Frazier all achieved the Olympic qualifying time of 2:19, with Ciobanu, Thornton, Hehir and Frazier all missing the cut.

Gladys Ganiel and Barbara Sanchez both hit the women’s mark of 2:45 but they also were not selected by the five-person panel. Rob Heffernan will lead a strong team of 50km race walkers.

The organisers of the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon said last week they will continue to campaign to have the race turned into an Olympic qualifying event for Irish athletes.

Hehir and Pauline Curley were crowned national champions last October but neither will be on the plane to Rio, although Hehir has been named second reserve for the men's team.

"I'm happy with the teams that we have selected," said High Performance Director Kevin Ankrom. "I believe the athletes chosen will be prepared to produce a performance to match their capabilities.

"It's never easy to tell some of the athletes that they aren't selected and I understand their disappointment.

"I believe we have picked the best team and I also look forward to good performances by teams at the European Championships in the half marathon. Athletes have raised the bar in their performances and that is very encouraging to see. We have also picked reserves and subject to illness or injury they can be selected for nomination by 11 July."

Athletes not selected have a right to appeal within 24 hours with appeals heard by the end of the working week 27 May.
