Caster Semenya underlined her status as favourite for 800 metres gold at the Rio Olympics by running the fastest time in four years at the Diamond League meeting in Rabat on Sunday.

The South African, who found herself at the centre of a gender row following her victory at the 2009 World Championships and had to undergo gender testing before being cleared to return to competition, clocked one minute 56.64 seconds to give further indication of her awesome form.

The 25-year-old finished more than a second ahead of world indoor champion Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi, whose 1min 57.74secs was the second fastest time in the world this year.

Semenya's time was her fastest since 2011 and she said afterwards in quotes reported on the Diamond League website: "In training, we try to do tactical races and fast sessions. What you see here is the outcome of the training.

"Of course it gives you a strong boost to beat a strong field like this one. I need to keep working hard in training now and then there is more to come."

Scotland's Lynsey Sharp ended her first 800m race of the outdoor season in fifth place in an impressive 1:59.71, with Shelayna Oskan-Clarke ninth in 2:01.65.

Ethiopian world champion Almaz Ayana ran the fifth fastest time ever to win the 5,000m, finishing more than 13 seconds clear of the field in 14:16.31.
