Mark English put in a classy performance to win the 500m at the Great North City Games in Tyneside in 59.58 seconds on Saturday.

The UCD athlete has been in excellent end of season form and usurped a number of top athletes including the USA's Johnny Dutch and Great Britain's Rabah Yousif; the latter made the final of the 400m at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Beijing.

"I'm delighted to be here and delighted to take the win," said English afterwards, whose season has now drawn to a close.

Thomas Barr finished his season on Friday night at the Brussels Diamond League meeting with a fifth place finish in the 400m hurdles in 49.80 seconds. The Ferrybank athlete rounded out his longest, and best, season to date.

Ciara Mageean (UCD) finished fifth over 1,500m in a new personal best of 4:06.49 in Rieti. She was narrowly outside the Olympic qualifying time of 4:06.00. Laura Crowe (An Riocht) finished fifth in the women's 800m in 2:04.68.

Sergiu Ciobanu (Clonliffe Harriers) continued his build-up for the Berlin Marathon with an easy victory at the Athlone Flatline Half Marathon in 66:19.
