Runner Martin Fagan, who had qualified for the Rio Olympics marathon, has decided to retire from athletics.

The Mullingar man, who previously served a two-year doping ban, told the Westmeath Independent that he was not enjoying his training.

The 31-year-old said: “I ran a race in the Pat Finnerty Road League [in May] and I just didn’t enjoy it. It’s hard to explain but I just lost the love for it.

"I woke up and didn’t want to run and I have been like that . . . for my own mental health I’m happy not running.”
