Ireland’s Thomas Barr smashed his own Irish 400m Hurdles record tonight in Rome with a time of 48.65 seconds.
The Waterford athlete was drawn in lane two at the high-quality Diamond League meeting with the world’s best one-lap hurdlers drawn in the outer lanes.
Conditions were perfect for the race as Barr scorched around the track and produced his infamous strong finish to grab fourth place and a new Irish record.
The time improved his own national mark of 48.90 seconds, which he set 12 months ago in Genève. The race was won by Johnny Dutch (USA) in a time of 48.13 seconds.
The impressive performance by Barr comes in the same week he was named on the Irish team for the World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea which take place from the 3–14 July.
