Ireland finished sixth in Heat 3 of the men’s 4x400m at the IAAF World Relays in Nassau, Bahamas.
The Irish team of Thomas Barr, Craig Lynch, Brian Murphy and Richard Morrissey ran a season-best time of 3:07.11 but failed to qualify for the final.
The heat was won by Trinidad and Tobago in a time of 3:02.09, with Belgium second in 3:02.41 and Britain as the third qualifier in a time 3:03.28.
Barr told Athletics Ireland afterwards: “I thought we could have got a quicker time, but we all gave it our all, so we can’t ask for more than that. It’s really good to have a team here.”
Meanwhile, the women’s 4x200m team set a new national record in their heat. Amy Foster, Steph Creaner, Sarah Lavin and Phil Healy ran 1:36.90 to finish fifth. Nigeria won in a time of 1:30.52.
Lavin said: "We’re happy with that, because one of the exchanges didn’t go well for us. It’s great to have the chance to run on this stage, and hopefully we’ll be able to put in a good performance tonight (12:29 am Irish time) too.”
The same quartet will also compete in the heats of the 4x100m, tonight.
