European Championship bronze medallist Mark English has been named 2014 Athlete of the Year at the National Athletics Awards in Dublin.

The UCD AC runner scooped the award in recognition of his winning Ireland’s first ever medal in the 800m at a major outdoor championship.

The 21-year-old Donegal man won his bronze at Zurich’s Stadion Letzigrund in August, coming home behind a Polish one-two of Adam Kszczot and Artur Kuciapski.

Also at today’s event in Santry, Roisin McGettigan was awarded her retrospective bronze medal for the 1500m from the 2009 European Indoor Athletics Championships in Turin - following the banning of the winner Anna Alminova of Russia due to a doping offence.

McGettigan, who had finished fourth in the championships, will now enter the record books as the winner of Ireland’s 21st European Indoor medal.
