Aileen Reid has won silver in Saturday's final leg of the World Triathlon Series in London.

Reid held off Australia's Emma Moffatt to take runner-up with Wales' Non Stafford taking fourth and the overall title

The Derry competitor finishes eighth overall in the competition.

"I’m totally delighted with second place. It’s amazing"

It was a dramatic race, with the two leading athletes in the standings, American Gwen Jorgensen and Germany's Anne Haug, both dropping out of contention.

Haug never recovered from a terrible swim while Jorgensen crashed on the bike.

Reid said: “There was so much Irish support for the Olympics and again here today, there were Irish flags everywhere along the course.

“I was running with Jodie Stimpson and Moffy and I just thought 'how am I staying here?'

"I felt good and saw I got a wee bit of a gap on Jodie so I just pushed more and more to see if I could get a medal.

“I’m totally delighted with second place. It’s amazing.”

“I’ve been consistent all year but that result was just the icing on the cake.”
