Steven Colvert of Crusaders AC ran 20.57 for the 200m to place second at the European Athletics Classic Meeting in Velenje, Slovenia.
Colvert’s time is a new Irish U-23 record, eclipsing the old mark held by his training partner Paul Hession (Athenry AC) which stood at 20.61.
Colvert now holds both the 100m and 200m Irish U-23 records having run 10.35 in May to break the 100m U23 record. Colvert’s time is only .02 outside the Olympic A Qualifying Standard of 20.55
At the same meet Derval O’Rourke (Leevale AC) placed second in the 100m hurdles in a time of 13.26.
The time improved on O’Rourke’s seasonal opener of 13.47 set in Switzerland last week.
Paul Hession (Athenry AC) placed sixth in the 200m in 20.97.
